The Belton community is deeply mourning the tragic loss of 50-year-old Vernon Richard Loechel, who was fatally injured Wednesday afternoon in a severe crash involving a passenger vehicle and a trash truck on FM 439 in Bell County. His sudden passing has shocked residents and loved ones alike, leaving a void in the community.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Loechel was traveling westbound in an Audi when his vehicle unexpectedly crossed into the oncoming lane for reasons still under investigation. The vehicle collided head-on with a Peterbilt trash truck, causing a chain reaction that resulted in the truck veering off the roadway and crashing into Lake Food Mart near Wildwood Drive.
Emergency responders arrived promptly to secure the scene, assist the injured, and assess the damage to the store. Tragically, Loechel was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Duffield. The driver of the trash truck was transported to Baylor Scott & White Health with non-incapacitating injuries. Additionally, at least two individuals inside the store sustained minor injuries during the impact.
The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing, with authorities working diligently to determine what led Loechel’s vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic. The incident has left family, friends, and the entire Belton community in shock and grief over the loss of a man who was taken far too soon.
As the community mourns, residents are coming together to reflect on Loechel’s life and the tragedy that has struck their town. The Texas DPS continues its investigation, and the community offers condolences and support to those affected by this devastating event.
