We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Elder W. Mark Bassett, a devoted General Authority Seventy who faithfully served since April 2016. Elder Bassett passed away on May 11, 2026, following a traumatic brain injury sustained while he was with his family in St. George, Utah. His passing is a profound loss to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and to the countless lives he influenced through his Christlike service, leadership, and unwavering faith.
At the time of his passing, Elder Bassett was serving as the Executive Director of the Missionary Department, where he played a significant role in guiding worldwide missionary efforts during a remarkable period of historic growth and increased missionary participation. His leadership reflected humility, wisdom, compassion, and a deep commitment to the Savior and His gospel. Elder Bassett dedicated his life to helping others strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ and come unto Him.
Just days before his passing, Elder Bassett addressed missionaries at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, where he testified with conviction and encouraged them to “Invite everyone to come—and do everything you can to help them enter this beautiful gate, which leads to eternal life.” Those words now stand as a powerful reflection of the life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind. His example of discipleship, kindness, and devoted ministry will continue to inspire generations to come.
